Chess Board Projects
Introduction by Francis Glassborow
This section focuses on projects based on uses of a traditional 8 by 8 chessboard as well as the many variations round the world.
In addition to International Chess and Draughts there are a large variety of alternatives to Chess and Draughts. Some are played on the traditional 8 by 8 board, others use different rectangular arrays. A couple even use non-rectangular boards.
It is generally very difficult to program a computer to play even fairly simple variations of Chess, though Draughts (or Checkers) is somewhat easier. However providing tools for the study of chess and variations as well as tools for play over a network or the Internet can be quite demanding, excellent opportunities to hone programming skills and a positive contribution to the wider community.
