CD Substitute
Obtaining and installing the tools
This page is to provide some assistance to those whose copy of my book is either an ebook version or a library copy. Such copies often come without an installation CD. The alternative is going to be more awkward to install because I cannot provide a complete CD image here (my host ISP would not tolerate such a large item for download)
Step 1
Download the self extracting file (approximately 3.4 Mbytes) from here and run it. When prompted for where to extract the contents, replace the default choice with X:\ where X is replaced by the drive you want to use. This should create a directory tree whose root is 'tutorial' and whose subdirectories contain all the material provided by me. Next you will have to obtain the material provided by others.
Step 2
get the latest version of Al Stevens' Quincy and install it in the tutorial directory. As a result you should have an extra subdirectory in tutorial called quincy2002.
Step 3
Get the current release of MinGW. You will need to follow the links to a suitable mirror site. Now install that in the tutorial\quincy2002 subdirectory. Note that what you need is the self extracting file with the name MinGW-3.1.0-1.EXE
Note
If you have problems with this you will need to find a local 'expert' at installing software from the Net. It is effectively impossible for me to provide help at this stage as individual computer set-ups are too diverse. If your expert discovers a problem with my instructions and think they can be improved or corrected I would be most happy to hear from him/her.
